On Sunday we looked at passage in the Bible were God talks about contentment. Here is a message from an older series that talks about contentment and our attitude toward money.

Mexico Outreach happens every month, get involved today!

Our church supports a orphanage in Mexico. Towards the beginning of each month a team of volunteers goes on a one day trip to Ensenada to help share God's love. To find out how to get involved check out our outreach webpage here, or email us at info@newlifecommunitychurch.net

Flyers for new relationship series

In September we're doing a series on love from 1 Corinthians 13. We just got the flyers printed and we need your help to get them out.

1) Grab a handful of flyers and pass them out where you live/work/play

2) Give a gift to help us mail out 20,000 of the flyers. It takes about $14 to reach 100 people.

Helping those in need

The Bible says “He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.” (Proverbs 19:17). We’re On a Mission.

Around New Life you’ll hear the phrase “On Mission”. There’s a reason. Our goal is to help people live “On Mission” for Jesus Christ. If you’re new to our church, we want to give you idea of what being “On Mission” is all about. So with that in mind, read on!

What does it mean to be on mission? A “On mission” person is someone who understands and engages in the mission Christ has given our church.

What is our church’s Mission? Our purpose is to reach people for Christ and get them grounded, growing and on mission. That is our picture of what a disciple-making church looks like

What does an “On Mission” Person Look Like? An on mission person is someone who embraces and lives out our mission of being “grounded, growing, on mission”. Those three words have specific meanings for us. So let’s look at a quick snapshot of what a grounded, growing and on mission member looks like.

Someone who is grounded in Christ…
• Places their faith in Christ’s finished work
• Experiences assurance of salvation through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
• Publicly declares their faith through Baptism

Someone who is growing in Christ…
• Understands the faith essentials
• Embraces the discipleship essentials
• Pursues opportunities for growing together in Christ

Someone who is on mission for Christ…
• Make a commitment to the body of Christ
• Makes a contribution to the cause of Christ.
• Pursues their unique role in the mission of Christ

1 Timothy Background Fact - Background on the church of Ephesus

The book of 1st Timothy was written to Timothy while He was serving at the church in Ephesus. Here is some background on the church of Ephesus.

We don't know who first brought the Gospel to Ephesus first. There were Jews from Asia present at Pentecost. During Paul's second missionary journey he made a weekend visit to the synagogue in Ephesus and left his helpers, Aquila and Priscilla. It appears that there was a group of Christians in Ephesus before Paul began his ministry there. The church however, seems to have received its definite organisational beginnings with the ministry of Paul. (Acts 19:9)

During Paul's third missionary journey as was his practice, he began his ministry in the Jewish Synagogue. When fierce opposition arose, Paul separated the disciples, organised the believers as a separate and distinct group, and began a two-year ministry centred in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. (Acts 19:8-10) The Gospel ministry began to have dramatic effects on the worship of Artemis and the magical arts and when severe opposition broke out Paul was forced in leaving the city after three years of ministry. Paul left the Church under the leadership of her own elders. (Acts 20:17) He returned briefly after his release from the first Roman imprisonment. (1 Timothy 1:3)

1) Fall Mailer:

We want to send an invitation to 20,000 neighbors who live within a radius of the church, and we need your help to do it. The total cost of the mailing is $2,820.00. That breaks down to $14.00 to reach 100 people. Can you help with the cost of this outreach? If so, when you make your gift, designate it to “mailer”.

2) Mexico Outreach:

Casa Hogar, the orphanage we support in Ensenada Mexico, has lost a lot of the support it was receiving from other churches & organizations. Right now, just being able to supply adequate meals has been a struggle for them. If you'd like to help, please make a gift towards "Mexico Outreach".

1 Timothy Background Fact - Background on the City of Ephesus

The book of 1st Timothy was written to Timothy while He was serving at the church in Ephesus. Here is some background on the city of Ephesus.

Holman Bible Dictionary:

EPHESUS (ehf’ uh ssuhss) One of the largest and most impressive cities in the ancient world, a political, religious, and commercial center in Asia Minor. Associated with the ministries of Paul, Timothy, and the apostle John, the city played a significant role in the spread of early Christianity. Ephesus and its inhabitants are mentioned more than twenty times in the New Testament.

Ephesus in the New Testament:

Paul stopped at Ephesus at the end of his second missionary journey, left Priscilla and Aquila there, and returned to Antioch (Acts 18:18-21). Apollos preached in Ephesus soon thereafter and met Priscilla and Aquila who “expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly” (18:26). Paul, on his third journey, spent more than two years in Ephesus teaching and preaching in the synagogue and in the hall of Tyrannus. The success of his preaching at Ephesus triggered a riot headed by the silversmiths who feared that their business of selling miniature replicas of Artemis (Diana) or her temple would suffer severely (Acts 19:24-41). After the town clerk quelled the disturbance, Paul left Ephesus for Macedonia. At the conclusion of this missionary endeavor, on his way back to Palestine, Paul stopped at Miletus and sent for the elders of the church in Ephesus so that he might speak with them (20:17).

Ephesus is also mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:32. Paul noted that he had fought with beasts at Ephesus. Many commentators understand this statement to be only a figurative reference to strong and dangerous opposition. At the close of 1 Corinthians, Paul wrote that he would remain at Ephesus until Pentecost “for a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries” (16:8-9).

Elsewhere in the New Testament Ephesus appears as the location of one of the seven churches addressed in Revelation (1:11; 2:1). Ephesus, the leading city of Asia Minor, is appropriately the first of the seven churches. In the opening verse of the letter to the Ephesians some manuscripts describe the recipients of the letter as the saints who are “at Ephesus.” The earliest and most reliable manuscripts, however, do not include the reference to Ephesus. In 1 and 2 Timothy, Ephesus is mentioned three times. Timothy was urged to remain at Ephesus (1 Tim. 1:3); reference is made to Onesiphorus and “in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus” (2 Tim. 1:16-18); and the writer stated that Tychicus had been sent to Ephesus (2 Tim. 4:12).

Christian tradition from the second century and later claimed that the apostle John moved to Ephesus, and after living to an old age, died a natural death there. Another, more dubious tradition states that Mary the mother of Jesus also died in Ephesus. See Asia Minor; Ephesians; Revelation, Book of; Timothy.

1 Timothy Background Fact - Timothy

The book of 1st Timothy is a letter written to a young leader named Timothy. The following is a entry from a Bible dictionary regarding Timothy….

TIMOTHY (tihm’ oh thee) Personal name meaning, “honoring God.” Friend and trusted coworker of Paul. When Timothy was a child, his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois taught him the Scriptures (2 Tim. 1:5; 3:15). A native of Lystra, he may have been converted on Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 14:6-23). Paul referred to Timothy as his child in the faith
(1 Cor. 4:17; 1 Tim. 1:2; 2 Tim. 1:2). This probably means that Paul was instrumental in Timothy’s conversion. When Paul came to Lystra on his second journey, Timothy was a disciple who was well-respected by the believers (Acts 16:1-2). Paul asked Timothy to accompany him. Timothy’s father was a Greek, and Timothy had not been circumcised. Because they would be ministering to many Jews and because Timothy’s mother was Jewish, Paul had Timothy circumcised (Acts 16:3).

Timothy not only accompanied Paul but also was sent on many crucial missions by Paul (Acts 17:14-15; 18:5; 19:22; 20:4; Rom. 16:21; 1 Cor. 16:10; 2 Cor. 1:19; 1 Thess. 3:2,6). For example, when Paul was unable to go to Corinth, he sent Timothy to represent Paul and his teachings (1 Cor. 4:17). Later when Paul was in prison, he sent Timothy to Philippi (Phil. 2:19).

Paul felt that no one had any more compassion and commitment than Timothy (Phil. 2:20-22).

So close were Paul and Timothy that both names are listed as the authors of six of Paul’s letters (2 Cor. 1:1; Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:1; 1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1; Philem. 1). In addition, Paul wrote two letters to Timothy (1 Tim. 1:2; 2 Tim. 1:2). As Paul’s ministry neared the end, he challenged Timothy to remain true to his calling (1 Tim. 1:18). As Paul faced death, he asked Timothy to come to be with him (2 Tim. 4:9). At some point in his life, Timothy was imprisoned; but he was released (Heb. 13:23). See Paul; 1 Timothy; 2 Timothy.

Pray for the Youth!

Our Youth Groups are up at camp this week. High School group is at Hume Lake, and our Jr. High group is at Ponderosa Pines.

Many Christians have stated that they first began their relationship with Christ at a summer camp. Pray that God will impact our youth to have an awesome time and for our youth to have truely changed lives.
